Texas Rangers Add Darren Oliver To Staff, Announce Michael Young Night For May

The Texas Rangers announced today that the longtime major league pitcher Darren Oliver has been named Special Assistant to the General Manager.

The 43 - year-old Oliver, who retired last fall after 20 seasons in the majors, will work with the president of baseball operations and general manager Jon Daniels and his staff in a variety of areas, with emphasis on pitching.

"We are pleased to welcome Darren Oliver in an official capacity with the Rangers," Daniels said. “Darren will focus on launching both higher and lower levels of league, which will have a presence in Arlington and our affiliated minor leagues. Also hope that it will be a box of valuable resonance to our group of baseball operations in all fronts.

“Darren has been working with us informally in recent months and was a great asset to our trip to the Dominican Republic in January and during several weeks in training camp spring. Glad we were able to formalize that relationship. "

Oliver, who lives in Southlake, spent his last two seasons as a reliever with the Toronto Blue Jays, going 3-4, 4.08 in 50 games in 2014. Lefty was honored by the Rangers as the recipient of the 2014 Mark Holtz Alumni Award January for their achievements during three different periods with the club.

In addition, the Texas Rangers announced today that the club will honor Michael Young in a ceremony before the game on Saturday 17 May, the club before the game with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Young retired as a Texas Ranger on January 31, 2014 after an illustrious 13-year career in the majors. In his 11 full seasons with the Rangers from 2002-12 , was selected as the team player of the year five times and was a member of seven AL All- Star Team . Young hit .300 or better seven times, including six seasons with at least 200 hits. He won the batting title in the American League in 2005 and was the MVP of the NBA All-Star 2006 in San Diego.

He is the " leader of all time Washington / Texas Games ( 1823 ) , hits ( 2,230 ) , runs ( 1085 ), doubles ( 415) , triples (55 ), total bases ( 3,286 ) , at bats ( 7399 ) , and multi - hit ( 651) and ranks third in RBIs ( 984) and extra base hits ( 647) games. Young started in all four infield positions in his Rangers career, winning a Gold Glove at shortstop in 2008.

Overall, Young hit .300 with 185 homers and 1,030 RBIs in 1,970 games with the Rangers (2000-2012), Philadelphia (2013), and Dodgers (2013).
